VoIP Security: 6 Tips to Protect Your Business Phone System
A modern VoIP system offers flexibility and cost savings, but it’s important to keep it secure. Here’s how:
1. Use Strong Passwords
Never use default passwords. Use unique, complex ones for each device and extension.
2. Limit International Calling
If you don’t need it, disable international dialing to prevent toll fraud.
3. Enable Call Logging
Regularly review call logs for unusual activity.
4. Use VPN or Encrypted SIP
Whenever possible, route voice traffic through secure tunnels or use TLS/SRTP for encryption.
5. Restrict Access
Whitelist IPs or enforce geo-blocking for management portals and SIP endpoints.
6. Update Firmware Regularly
Outdated VoIP phones and routers are common attack vectors.
